Sub-Soil Properties of Hydrocarbon Contaminated Sites in Parts of The Eastern Niger Delta, Nigeria by Nwankwoala HO in Open Access Journal of Environmental and Soil Science in Lupine Publishers

This study aims at assessing the subsurface soil properties of contaminated sites in parts of the Niger Delta with a view to providing basic data that would guide not only future development and construction in the region but in choosing remediation options for contaminated sites. Standard soil sampling and analytical methods were employed in the study. Soil moisture content values range from 5.2 to 97. 9 with spikes at Okrika OKR-CTRL and BM-CTRL probably due to shallow water table encountered at shallow depth of 2.0 m. While the average moisture level at contaminated sites was 20.08 while that of the control sites was 17. 85. The variation also suggests higher water retention potential of contaminated soils against normal clean soil which in essence will enhance contaminant persistence in the soil. The soil pH value for control sites tends to normal range i.e towards 7.0, while the values for impacted sites are slightly lower. Most samples had normal soil pH ranges except BM-SS1 which indicated acidic soil conditions with ranges of 4.5-5.8. Liquid Limit is higher for control samples than contaminated sites at Okrika, Ogu-Bolo, Bomu manifold and Norkpo while Liquid Limit value for impacted site at Sime is higher than the control site and similar for Nonwa sites.

The research was conducted on Ghabre Nakhoda and Dara islands in Khore Mosa Creek in Persian Gulf on August in 2003, 2009, 2012, and 2016. Total count method was used to obtain the census of the nests and breeding population of terns and Western Reef Heron on Islands. Five species of terns and Western Reef Heron had bred on Ghabre Nakhoda and Dara islands in 2003, 2009, 2012, and 2016. Average breeding pairs of Lesser Crested Tern Thalasseus bengalensis, Swift Tern Thalasseus bergii, Bridled Tern Sterna anaethetus, White-cheeked Tern Sterna repressa, Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia and Western Reef Heron Egretta gularis were 1368, 63, 217, 71, and 13 pairs on Ghabre Nakhoda and 127, 7, 54, 4, 9, and 6 pairs on Dara, respectively. Thirty-one species from ten families belonged to two order of water birds recorded on August in 2003, 2009, 2012, and 2016 on both islands. Total number of counted water birds was 26303 individuals on Ghabre Nakhoda and 17404 individuals on Dara Island in 2003, 2009, 2012 and 2016. Maximum species richness on Ghabre Nakhoda was in 2016(31 species), but on Dara island was in 2009(18 species).

Activity of the Strain Streptomyces hydrogenans against Phytopathogenic Fungi by Olga V Efremenkova Open Access Journal of Environmental and Soil Sciences in Lupine Publishers

Actinobacterium was isolated from the nature and shown that it has actymotic activity against five phytopathogenic fungi that infect cereals. The strain is identified as Streptomyces hydrogenans. It can be the basis for the development of plant protection products against phytopathogenic fungi.

Lupine Publishers-Review on Environmental Journals



Reported Impact Assessment of an intervention ‘Land Shaping Technology’ implemented at farmer’s field under NAIP project at different villages of south 24-Pargans district of West Bengal aiming for rainwater harvesting for irrigating crops. Farm data was collected from the randomly selected farmers of both Interevent and control groups. Partial budgeting analysis was done to assess the comparative performances with respect to sources of income and livelihoods, diversification of input cost, labour cost, employment generation, production etc. The impact of Land Shaping technology can be assessed from the fact that the landscape and cropping pattern has been changed from single crop to multi crop round the year resulting in enhanced productivity, employment generation, income and related activities arresting migration of people to cities in search of jobs for livelihood in intervened farmer’s plots compared to those in control plots.
